BAJA BIRD TRIP REPORT PAGE

BIRDS OF LUNA LAKE, ALPINE, EASTERN ARIZONA, EARLY JULY 2005

After a week at Arivaca I drove 250 miles to Alpine, located in eastern Arizona. Luna Lake is about 100 acre in extent, in a pine forest about 6,000 ft. The birdlife was different than at Arivaca. Here I found Western Bluebirds (with young), Rufus and Broad-tailed hummers, White-breasted nuthatches.

I photographed a female American Kestrel feeding her young in a hollowed out nest fifty feet up in an old aspen. She spent only seconds feeding the young, coming and going before I got many pictures. I tried to catch her in flight and got a couple of shots. Here are a few pictures.

The American Kestrel

The Hummers were here, but not in the numbers as at Arivaca. Here are some male Rufus.

A White-breasted Nuthatch was very active at my cut-open beer can feeder. I just cut two openings in the sides (about half-way up from the bottom) fill it with sunflower seeds, and this bird jumped on it

I also photographed a family of Western Bluebirds, the two adults had three young fledged birds.
