SUBJECT: GREEN-BACKED HERON
Butorides striatus

DATE: Oct 20 2006

DESCRIPTION: While birding Rancho Laguna, I photographed an immature Green-backed Heron. I was able to get about 20 feet away. He tended to stay in fairly heavy brush, so some shots are not very good. Note the dried Cicadea casings on some of the twigs.

The Green-backed Heron is found on lakes, marshes and ponds along the west coast from Washington to Mexico and south Arizona and N.M.
